Teacher Tuesday: Honoring Ms. Jamieson

Last week I heard that a sorority sister passed away.  It is tradition for the sorority to have a ceremony sending our sister off to heaven.  I was not able to make it though I was trying my best to see if I could.  I didn't know this woman but as is with the bonds of sisterhood, felt obliged to pay my respects. Imagine my surprise when I see the obituary and realize that this was my high school business teacher!  The one that helped me type at a million miles an hour and introduced me to word processing.  I remember going to these business conferences.  She's partly responsible for my organization and slight OCD!

I remember Ms. Jamieson as a no nonsense kind of teacher.  But underneath that, I could tell she really cared about her students and she went out of her way to make sure that we learned what we needed to learn.  She was funny though if you were busy being a clown in class, you'd never know it.

Needless to say, I remember her fondly.  This situation has reminded me once again of how short life is.  But I've also had the opportunity to reflect back on all of the teachers that made a difference in my life.  I almost feel bad that I have had so many of them while some have had none but that just makes me feel even more thankful.

I think being a teacher is one of the hardest jobs you can do.  It brings with it great rewards, though.  I wish that we held the position in a higher esteem than we sometimes do.

I've always counted myself as lucky when it came to teachers.  I feel that I was blessed to have some pretty great ones throughout the years.  Those that molded me, that took what they saw and made it better.  Those that simply helped me grow a little more. Ms. Jamieson was definitely one of those teachers. I wish I could've told her while she lived but, I know that, looking down from heaven she's giving me that look she used to give with that half smile that told me she was pleased.

May you rest in peace, Soror.
