Mami Reads: Mindfulness Workbook for Dummies

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book to review First, let me tell you what mindfulness is:

  1. the quality or state of being conscious or aware of something.
  2. a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

With all that we have going on, I think it's difficult for us to get to that state. Enter:

Mindfulness

Everything happens for a reason, I always say. And this book landed on my front steps at the right time. I am a fan of being centered, of being present and understanding how sometimes our daily grind is counterproductive to the way we are living.

The book is set up in a way that you don't have to read it cover to cover to get started (which is a good thing). Also, some things may pique your interest more than others as you begin this journey.  I am a fan of meditation but don't do it often. In part because I feel like I have to have all this stuff in order before I do it. Isn't that the case for so many things?

There are 10 parts to the book: getting started with mindfulness, preparing yourself for mindful living, practicing mindfulness, enjoying the rewards of mindfulness and the part of tens.

I am not through the entire book yet. But I will tell you that I love the layout of the book and I don't feel guilty for not having read cover to cover. I'm working my workbook and putting into practice what I am learning (though I'm having a hard time writing in the book, y'all know how I feel about books).  With additional online help where you can download meditations, I think this is the perfect book for someone who wants to get started on this practice.

What you will love about this book is that it helps you with your thoughts. Setting up the right mindset is so important. If you remember, we talked a little about this when I reviewed One Thousand Gifts. Similar concept of being present and of making sure that you set your attitude in such a way that it will bring you peace. To that I add focus and when you're in the right mindset, you are able to accomplish what you can. Can you imagine being less stressed? This is what mindfulness brings to you.

It teaches you to silence those negative thoughts, overcome them and focus on what matters. I'm excited about this book and hope you are too. Going on their site, you'll be able to read an excerpt of the first chapter to give you a feel for what's in store.

Disclosure: I received a copy of this book in order to review. As always, all thoughts, opinions and living in the moment are purely my own.
