If Dominican Were a Color Cover Reveal

It. Has. Been. A. Week. Actually, I could say that about the whole of 2020 thus far. But, here I am.

Almost one week out of my year in white, I’m still adjusting. And because far be it for me to hold space for only one thing in my life (or 2), I had the pleasure of revealing the cover of my book, If Dominican Were a Color, on February 3rd.

A year ago, almost to the day, I got a phone call standing in my kitchen as I was preparing to leave for my crowning ceremony. It rooted me on the spot and all I could do was cry as I looked toward my sister. Denene was on the other end of that call letting me know that she presented the idea of my book as part of the Denene Millner Books line up and everyone loved it.

I thought it was my gift from Orisha and Eggun as I embarked on the journey of my year in white. A hint of all the good things to come. Fast forward to now and it has felt like a birthday gift to celebrate the anniversary of my crowning.

I don’t have the appropriate words. I just have gratitude. Gratitude, gratitude, gratitude. With lots of joy sprinkled on top. With a side of humility and spoonfuls of love.

This book is illustrated by the incomparable Brianna McCarthy who poured my words onto the canvas and with her tools made them come to life. Brianna, thank you for honoring your calling, thank you for saying yes to this project. Thank you for painting the picture that I tried to put into words.

My brain and heart are full as I’ve seen the cover of both the English and Spanish versions shared across social media.

If you’d like to pre-order a copy, head on over to the book page and get it from your favorite bookseller. Thank you for sharing a piece of my heart. I hope to see you at a bookstore come September.
